Colombian Emerald FAQs
Answers to common questions about Zarah Colombian emeralds, treatment, laboratory reports, supply and fine jewellery.
Where do Zarah’s Colombian emeralds come from?
Zarah operates directly within Colombia’s emerald trade, with a presence in Bogotá and western Boyacá, including the Muzo and Maripí mining region. We work independently across different sources and maintain direct relationships with miners, mine owners and other participants within the local trade.
Do you supply both cut and rough Colombian emeralds?
Zarah primarily supplies cut and polished Colombian emeralds, including single stones, matched pairs, calibrated stones and layouts. We also have the capability to supply rough Colombian emerald material for specialist requirements and trade clients, subject to availability and specification.
Are Colombian emeralds treated?
The majority of Colombian emeralds undergo clarity enhancement, most commonly with oil treatment. Zarah provides clear disclosure of any treatment associated with the emeralds we supply, with treatment details included in the independent gemmological laboratory report provided with each stone.
Do you supply no-oil Colombian emeralds?
Yes. No-oil Colombian emeralds are available subject to current inventory and specific requirements. Where treatment status is particularly important, an independent gemmological laboratory report will be provided.
Do Zarah emeralds come with independent gemmological laboratory reports?
Yes. Independent gemmological laboratory reports are provided for suitable emeralds where required. The appropriate laboratory and report will depend on the stone, its value and the requirements of the client.
Can Zarah source an emerald to specific requirements?
Yes. We can work to requirements including size, shape, colour, treatment, quality and budget. Our presence within Colombia’s emerald trade allows us to consider material from different sources rather than being restricted to the production of a single mine.
Do you supply matched pairs, calibrated stones and layouts?
Yes. Zarah can supply matched pairs, calibrated stones, colour-matched material and layouts for jewellery production, subject to the specifications and quantities required.
Do you work with both private clients and the jewellery trade?
Yes. We work with private buyers, jewellers, designers, wholesalers and specialist rough buyers internationally. Requirements can range from a single fine emerald to repeat commercial quantities.
Does Zarah create bespoke Colombian emerald jewellery?
Yes. We create bespoke commissions centred on Colombian emeralds, as well as original Zarah fine jewellery. Each commission can begin with the selection of the emerald before the design of the finished piece is developed.
Where is Zarah fine jewellery made?
Zarah fine jewellery is produced in Bogotá using Colombian emeralds, precious metals and supporting gemstones selected according to the design. Our jewellery is made in 18k gold or platinum where appropriate.
How should I care for Colombian emerald jewellery?
Emerald jewellery should be handled with care and protected from impact, excessive heat and harsh chemicals. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are generally not recommended for emeralds. Gentle cleaning with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth or brush is usually preferable.
Can Zarah supply Colombian emeralds internationally?
Yes. Zarah works with clients internationally. Shipping arrangements depend on the destination, the nature and value of the goods, and any applicable customs or import requirements.
